Whether consciously or not, we make choices everyday. For most of us tactful people, we choose what we say to everyone we meet. We choose what clothes to wear and what we eat. For commuters, we choose if we will ride an FX or Jeepney. We choose what duties we would do first in a day.
We choose our friends. We choose our responses to people whether we’d react negatively or respond in love to the things they do or say to us. We choose whether we forgive or take vengeance. We choose our way of life. Because God has given us the freewill to decide for ourselves-what we will accept or reject in every area of our life–God has given us the freedom to choose.
I would like to propose some guidelines to be sure that we’ll be choosing the right path towards successful and meaningful life:
1.) Choose what is TRUE.
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me-put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”-Philippians 4:8-9
You know the game “Truth or Consequence”, right? You know the drill. It’s true that there is always a consequence to our lies. Remember the story of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”? Well, if you’re lying to your friend or parent about something, you’ll eventually lose their trust. You know how it feels when you’re being lied to, right? Let us love our neighbor the way we love ourselves.
2.) Choose what is RIGHT.
“If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God…However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you.” Deuteronomy 28:1-2;15
The above Scripture enumerates the consequences of our obedience and disobedience. The cost of obedience is more valuable compared to the consequences of disobedience. Obedience brings Blessings and Disobedience brings Curses.
Let’s talk about the passing pleasure of sin. All around us are some lives of people who have chosen the wrong path, shortcuts, and compromises-look at what has happened to them down the road? Most of them regret the choices they made but it’s too late to turn back. They’re now paying the price of their wrong choices. If only we could mentally think through the consequence of the sin or wrong choice that we’re about to make we would surely not take same ill-fated path.
Let us keep moving forward to our bright destinies without returning to our old lives of degradation and neglect.
It would also help if we have a group of people around us, mentors, kindred spirits who have the same passion for excellence and determination that would guide us when we’re faced with difficult decisions.
3.) Choose what is EXCELLENT.
“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.”-Romans 1:21
There is nothing like following the path of righteousness and wisdom as declared in the Bible. Nothing can be more excellent than a life that’s committed to living for the glory of an excellent Creator who makes all things beautiful in His time. He straightens out our every past mistakes if we surrender them to Him as He help us pursue a higher road to a better life.

It’s so much better to wait on God for our future lifetime partner than to just get into “disposable relationships” that often result to emotional baggages. Far better it is to set higher standards of living for the sake of the descendants that will come after us than to just settle in the current fashion or status quo.
Everything that you will decide on from this point onwards will surely affect the generations to come after you. Think about that!
You have no other choice but to choose. And you have no other time but NOW. Your life is of great value to God. He loves you more than you’ll ever know. His love is greater than anyone in this world can offer. No matter what choices you’re facing right now…let God lead the way.
