Last year’s Miss Universe pageant was like a fabulous Christmas gift for Filipinos after Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach bagged the most coveted Miss universe crown.
Many other beauty titlist made a name for themselves, but none so far has made such a big headline in the international scene more than Pia did. And here are just a few reasons why…
- The wrong announcement roasted the pageant host on social media
The Miss Universe pageant host, Steve Harvey, made an embarrassing mistake of announcing Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez-Arevalo, as the grand winner. And then after 10 seconds, he took it back to announce that Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach actually won the crown.
This gaffe got a lot people enraged and bashed the host unabatedly on Twitter that day, thereby contributing to the further popularity of our very own Miss Universe.
2. Filipinos worldwide made her top the pageant’s online votes
This year’s Miss Universe was the first time in the pageant’s history where viewers at home weighed in with their online votes tallied, in addition to four in-person celebrity judges. And because the 100-million strong Filipinos scattered across the world as OFW’s (Overseas Filipino Workers), immigrants, etc. voted for her, Pia topped the online votes.
3. She’s the third Filipina to win the Miss Universe title after 42 years
Gloria Diaz first brought home the Miss Universe crown to the Philippines in 1969. Four years after, she was followed by Margarita Moran who won the crown in 1973. For half a decade, other Filipina candidates have only gone so far as being part of the Top 10 for the most coveted Miss Universe title. Her winning the crown even with the host’s social blunder was worth the wait for the pageant-crazy Pinoys.
Overall, Pia’s charm, character, and wisdom won our hearts. And that is why not surprisingly, her comeback to the Philippines, again, made the headlines in the mass media recently.
